Those who have joined Southgate as members purpose together to glorify God by making Christ-followers of all peoples so that we become a redemptive community of all peoples communicating the truth of Christ to the world.

Questions About Membership

What’s involved in membership?

As a member, our joyful obligations are to honor and esteem church leaders, preserve the unity of the body, be active in service, and support the ministry that God has entrusted to Southgate.

Members also steward God’s resources through participating in church business meetings (held annually in December and occasionally throughout the year). Active members who are 18 years old and above are eligible to vote.

How do I become a member?

If you profess faith in Christ, have testified of your profession through baptism by immersion, and are in agreement with what Southgate believes, you are eligible for membership. If you’re interested in becoming a member, you may begin by attending a new members class. This class meets over a few weeks, typically on a Sunday morning during ABF, and provides an orientation to Southgate. Following this class, you’ll meet with the membership team, which may recommend candidates. Southgate’s active members vote on new members at business meetings throughout the year.

Do I have to agree to something to be a member?

Members of Southgate Baptist Church annually affirm our church covenant:

In the presence of God and of each other, confessing Jesus as our Savior, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit and fully understanding that the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, we joyfully and solemnly covenant with God and with one another:

  • Regularly to observe private prayer and the reading of the Word of God;
  • Diligently to study the Scriptures and teach them to our children;
  • Heartily to participate in the work and worship of the Church;
  • Consistently to observe the ordinance of the Lord's Supper;
  • Constantly to love one another with pure motives;
  • Faithfully to aid as God shall prosper us in supporting the ministry of this church;
  • Diligently to seek opportunities to lead others to Jesus Christ. Always to live soberly, righteously, and Godly in this world, abstaining from all things that dishonor our Lord Jesus Christ, cause a fellow believer to stumble, or hinder the winning of a soul to Christ.

And we covenant that when we move from this vicinity we shall unite as soon as feasible with some other church of like faith and practice.
